Active Channels: Is Channel Definition Format (CDF) Still Alive & Well?

What ever happened to Channel Definition Format and our ability
to syndicate (push) content to the desktop? Has it been entirely
obviated by RSS?

Can anybody show how to put RSS feeds onto the desktop as
easily as using Active Channels intended?
