<asp:EditCommandColumn> weirdnesses!

I've got this onn the left of my datagrid

<asp:EditCommandColumn ButtonType="LinkButton" UpdateText="Update"
HeaderText="Edit" CancelText="Cancel"
EditText="Edit"></asp:EditCommandColumn>

and an ItemCommand event with switch (e.commandname)

and even individual events for each command type (update, cancel etc..)


the trouble is that my Cancel hyperlink cancels the grid without tripping
off any events (no breakpoint is ever alighted on)

and more troublingly my Update hyperlink calls has a commandname of "Edit"
and even calls the Edit_command event stub!

how is this even possible?

the problem is this:
Edit trips off the editcommand no problem
Cancel cancels the edit mode
