I'm sure they don;t hide anything. And the review/suggestion ssytem was the
strongest thing making Amazon a good place from the start. And it keeps
evolving too, i.e you can comment on reviews, etc.

However if you not just browse but want to buy something -- and are on
limited budget -- better know that reading/understanding reviews and
translating them to your system is an art. Especially for technical books,
where the readers are on so many different levels of knowledge and interest.
You shall find out who of the reviewers can be of a similar mind as you (or
discover the opposite to ignore a review).

OTOH, I find claim of wasting money strange -- Amazon has a more than fair
returns policy, you can send back the product for full refund, no questions
asked. They also offer compensation on troubles, like loss in transit, late
arrival, etc, certainly for those you shall come out with some sensible
explanation.

I have the book I did read most of it but I did not find it useful for
anything I was doing. It is about an intermediate level book and goes
through many different concepts of the language.

myself. People are paid to leave positive reviews to help authors
sell books. I do learn more from the bad reviews even of books I tend

Do you have proof of that statement?  Paid by whom?  Have *you* ever
been paid (or even offered a payment) for a meritless positive review?
And if the positive review is justified (the book is actually good), is
it OK to be paid for such a review?

What's a "bad review"?  Badly written review?  Review pointing out bad
in the book?  Do you buy the book regardless of a bad review?  Why?  How
bad does a bad review have to be so you don't buy the book?  If you
don't buy the book, how can you "tend to like" it?  If you *do* buy the
book despite the bad review (I assume that a "bad" review is one that
does not recommend buying), and do like the book, what exactly do you
learn from the [bad] review?

I do sincerely hope your own reviews have more substance to them than
this post of yours, and use less ambiguous language.

I have the book I read it and it was not that useful for me and that
is what I can recall about the book. Some of my favorite are
Accelerated C++. I also liked other books like Windows Game
programming.

I saw a story about the FEC cracking down on people who get paid to
write reviews.
