Call for Hungarians

W

White Wolf

Hello,

I am looking for Hungarians, who read this newsgroup and are interested in
the Standard C++ Programming Language. I am trying to help to organize a
group of Hungarians, who are expert enough to contribute to the C++
Standardization work. I have already found two people (beyond me, but I am
not in Hungary). The plan is that we collect a group and try to form an
official Hungarian committee inside the Hungarian Standardization
Organization. I am just trying to find people who are knowledgeable and
willing, the rest will be up to the group, like getting sponsoring etc. In
theory it is possible that we might have a representative of Hungary some
time at the ISO WG21 meetings.

So those who think they know the standard enough and are willing to spend
their time as experts in a group like that please email me, with some
introduction of themselves.

I am not sure if there will be anything from this, so this is not a promise
of any kind. I just recently found out that there are many more people in
Hungary than I thought, who know the Standard and some of them might even be
interested in participating in the huge work of C++ standardization. So I
decided to send a call out. Of course there should be a lot of work done to
get an official committee organized, and to get into the work of the "big"
committee, without hassle for them. Also we have to prove that we are worth
of it - which is one point where I feel I still have a lot to do myself. :)

So please mail me! There is a mailing list set up, but - if possible - I
would like to know a bit more about the people before they get onto it.
Paul - who posts frequently here - is already subscribed. Once we are in
contact I will send invitation to the mailing list to you. If you prefer
not to mail me, the mailing list is hunstdcpp on yahoogroups:

(e-mail address removed)

The list is not moderated, but it is invitation only, so you will not be
able to send messages until I accept your subscribing, which may some time.

I would prefer if only Hungarians living in Hungary would ask for
subscription and people who already participate in the ISO or ANSI groups,
voting members or not. I will give away the ownership of the list as soon
as we have a group and someone is ready to take over.

This was also posted to comp.lang.c++.moderated

Don't you go trying to make Hungarian Notation a part of the standard,
now! ;-P

Hungarian notation has nothing to do with Hungarians. Only with one of
them, who has left his country forever, when he was 16, AFAIK.

Actually, Hungarian Notation was invented by a Czech, who was working for
Microsoft at the time.

If that Czech was a Hungarian, called Simonyi, then I agree. ;-)

GAH! You're all right of course. But I swear to God I read somewhere the guy
was a Czech!

In any case: my apologies for any national pride I may have unintentionally
hurt. ^_^

Hey! I had 2 contributions to that list (and I'm on the
acknowledgements page)!!!! I couldn't find them though... but they were:

1. Write your entire program in #defines. This necessitates using
global variables for everything.
2. Left AND Right justify your code. You want your comments to look
nice and neat, so make sure they're right justified. And those indents
on the left side? Feh, they're for pussies.

Seriously, I inherited two different code sets once, one had #1, and the
other had #2. My comment about #2 was, "You can always tell an old
FORTRAN programmer, but you can't tell him much."

You know what was the "nicest" about that notation going wild? Variable
names starting with szar. szarThis, szarThat. And why? Because szar means
shit in Hungarian (sz stands for s). I dunno, it was szomthing like size of
zero terminated array??? I dunno. But you were reading Microsoft code.
And it was (for a Hungarian) literally full of shit. :)

Ok...but you do know that there is now a ban on anyone from Hungary
suggesting possible variable naming conventions?

Seriously, for Pair Programming there's HowToPissOffYourPair.

For open source, there's HelpSourceForgeSuck.

And for those aspiring to become the Chief of a ChiefProgrammerTeam, there's
JobSecurity.

But nothing can beat "Of Mice and Methodologies":

Q: What's the difference between a methodologist and a terrorist?

A: You can negotiate with a terrorist.

Hurt? I'd think that Hungarians would look for any excuse to renounce him!

Perhaps the apology was meant for the Czechs.

Anyone mailing from the West can apologize to both. For the 44 years
between 1945 and 1989... :) So no apologies are wasted in Central Europe.

When I read this post I just *knew* the whole thread would be filled
with puns about hungarian notation with no useful reply in sight...
and behold.

(No, I am not from Hungary either, sorry.)

I have requested - those who are interested - to contact me by email or
subscribe to the mailing list. :) So I did not really expect any serious
replies here. And I think this little fun did not hurt anyone. Wart, wart.

Do not be sorry. Not everyone can be Hungarian. ;-)
