I would normally be asking this on debian-users, but that list has become so
slow as to be almost useless (takes hours - sometimes over a day - for a
message to reach the list. Any answer will take the same)

I've just installed Debian on a laptop using their new installer - which,
unfortunately, doesn't install any compile tools. Shouldn't be a problem
with apt, but...

I've used apt to install both gcc and g++. When I try to compile, I get an
error message because of a missing file: cc1plus. Can anyone here give me a
clue of how to fix?

The only way I know to fix a "missing file" error is to add that file.
It seems that you need to reinstall the compiler. Beyond that it is
quite off-topic here. Try comp.os.linux.development.* newsgroups or
gnu.g++.help.

Mandrake rules. I respect Debian for installing onto a notebook, but leaving
the build tools out of a Linux instance is outside the pale.

Post your question to a gnu mailing list. They suck too, but... they are
on-topic.
