Color Representations for Brown and Violet

Class <Color> includes constants for a lot of useful colors, but not-
able by their absence are brown and violet. Can anyone give me rgb
values for those two colors so I can create them using the standard

The Color class supports over 16.5 million different colors. Not all of
them are named, and AFAIK, there is no standard dictating what the RGB
values for brown or violet should be.

Rather than posting on the newsgroup everytime you want the RGB value
for a new colour, I recommend you actually learn how RGB works, and it
shouldn't be too difficult for you to come up with the values yourself. You
might want to start at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RGB.

You could also write a simple Java application (or applet if you prefer)
to help you visualize how your colours will look. Just add 3 sliders (one
for each of red, green and blue), and fill a rect with the color represented
by the value on the sliders.

You can easily develop some intuition for getting the desired RGB values
yourself. All you need to memorize is:
Color.black = new Color(0,0,0)
Color.white = new Color(255,255,255)
Color.red = new Color(255,0,0)
Color.green = new Color(0,255,0)
Color.blue = new Color(0,0,255)
The rest is done by mixing colors in your mind:
Violet is the middle between red and blue.
Brown is in the middle between red and black.
Got it?

d AFAIK, there is no standard dictating what the RGB
values for brown or violet should be.

There is the Netscape standard brown and violet. These names are
supported now by most browsers. HTML itself has a pathetically small
palette.

How to get A violet colour is a different question from how to get THE

There is only one instance of the applet but it has two sets of components.
The purpose was to see how various colors go with other colors. I will
modify the page to make that more clear, since as you point out it seems
unexpected.

The rest is done by mixing colors in your mind:
Violet is the middle between red and blue.
Brown is in the middle between red and black.
Got it?

Except you are mixing light not pigments. so
red+green = yellow
green + blue = turquoise
blue + red = violet

the color mixing rules for pigments and light have little to do with
physics and at a lot to with anatomy and the variable sensitivity of
different cells on your retina to different frequencies of light.

AWT still need something like JColorChooser and JColorChooser needs a
hex display.

I wrote a fairly primitive numerical hex/decimal ColorChooser for AWT.

It has no sliders or ability to pick a colour by pointing at it.

If I had known there was going to be a 'part 2', I'd
have advised that the knowledge of what some interior
designer chooses to define as 'DarkGoldenrod4' is of little
or no relevance to programmers who can call on a palette of
16,777,216 colors!

Given the range of colors, any definition of color by name
seems ..limiting and pointless.

And ..NO! Do *not* start defining names for each one!

The slider is not supposed to work - the sliders were added because I was
color-coding both buttons and scrollbars and wanted to see how they would
look together. I realize this is confusing to others because a slider would
make sense as part of a color choosing interface (or rather, 3 sliders would
make sense). I tried to explain it in the text notes below the applet, but
as we all know, you shouldn't have to put text notes below an applet. This
was just one of those applets I made for my own use and put up on the Web
because where else do you go to find applets you have written?

How to get A violet colour is a different question from how to get THE
violet colour. The link http://mindprod.com/jgloss/colour.html
should answer both.

It's difficult to come up with a value for violet, because it is
massively out of gamut, for RGB. Think, you've only got red, green and
blue to play with, but you want to create blue with less red and green
than blue phosphor (say) gives you.
