CPAN shell won't work

Debian testing, sshed in (from Ubuntu and WinXP). I execute the command
"perl -mCPAN -e shell" and it just goes to the bash prompt. I have
tried several different things, and can't seem to get it to work. This
is a fresh install, and I haven't done inital config on CPAN yet.

Duh....it's "perl -MCPAN -e shell"

Indeed. "perl -mCPAN -e shell" will load CPAN.pm but not import
anything, thus "shell" will not be a defined function, and thus, be
treated as a bareword -- a string.
