datagrid bound_column width on edit not sizing with ItemStyle

When clicking on my edit control the datagrid width is off the screen. I have
template columns that handle ddl's in addition to bound controls. I need to
get each column width fixed to a certain width with my bound column on edit.
<asp:BoundColumn DataField="dtStart" ReadOnly="False" HeaderText="Start">
<ItemStyle HorizontalAlign="Center" Width="15"></ItemStyle>
</asp:BoundColumn>

This code does not work on edit.
I'm using VB for code behind.
