dynamically set PYTHONVERBOSE (-v) flag?

[python 2.3.2, x86 SuSE Linux 8.2]

How can I dynamically set/unset the PYTHONVERBOSE flag?
During an interactive session I often want to trace an import
but not *all* the imports before that. There must be some
builtin variable I can set to control this...
