<h1> <h2> ?

Does it really matter if I put <h2> above an <h1> on a page? I want the second line
to have more importance with the search engines than the top line.

It wouldn't make sense.

Target your pages at lynx users[1], the search engine will follow.

[1] yes yes, add CSS to make it pretty, lynx is just a good way to sanity

Ad David said, it wouldn't make much sense. If you want the words in the
second heading to have more weight with the search engines, then use those
words in the copy, not the words in the main heading.

put what ever header you want anywhere on the page.
the only purpose of the header is to create an appearance and give a
section a title.
you can use any of the six header styles you want at any time.

No, put each header where it is correct.
the only purpose of the header is to create an appearance

No, that's what CSS is for.
and give a section a title.
Correct.

you can use any of the six header styles you want at any time.

There are a lot of things you /can/ do, but most people wouldn't do a
lot of them.

Richard pounced upon this pigeonhole and pronounced:
put what ever header you want anywhere on the page.
the only purpose of the header is to create an appearance and give a
section a title.

The purpose of headers [it's headings] is to give structure to a document,
not appearance.

Read about the forest elephants.

"The <H1> tag is by far the most important: it describes the purpose of
the whole site. Search engine spiders will use it to score your page's
relevancy." [with excuses for author's use of 'tag' for 'element']
you can use any of the six header styles you want at any time.

...in proper descending / nested order, of course.
