How to monitor downloads with Adword conversion tracking

At my website, visitors can download my freeware. I would like to monitor
the number downloads using Google's new Adword conversion tracking feature.
It seems I need to implement some kind of confirmation page for the download
operation. How can I do this?

Do you have access to your server logs? Why not just count how many times
the file name of your download turns up in the logs?
