IE not detecting Java plug in.

Hi,
I am using IE 6.0. and i was having JRE 1.4.1_02.
In my application, there was an applet which requrires JRE 1.4.2_03.

Hence when i open the applet page, it is giving a popup saying "Do you
want to install and run Java plug in 1.4.2". I clicked Yes and
installed online.

The problem is it is giving a pop up,
"This Installation package could not be opened.Verify that the package
exists and that you can access it". but it is opening the installer.
When i install it,
it is giving "Error:1311 Source file not
found:/do.../temp/jz142000.cab. Verify that the file exists and that
you can access it." And i could not proceed with the installation.

I downloaded 1.4.2_03 JRE and installed, but still IE is not detecting
it.
I think i need to do some tweak with the registry but i could not find
it.

I tried going to Control panel and selecting IE as the default browser
in the browser tab of Java control panel.And Tried by checking
Tools->Advanced Options and selecting JRE. But no luck.

And When I uninstalled and installed JRE now, i am not seeing the JAVA
control panel also !!! Weird ??? I am in helpless situation after
installing and uninstalling for atleast 20 times

Could any one faced such issue? Ideas are welcome.

It is a internal URL. You can not access it.
My main problem is IE not detecting the Java plug in installed
in the system.

What happens on an external URL such as www.segal.org/java/configuration/ ?
Does a Java applet appear? If so, what does it say for Java version?

Yes. java applet loads and i can see the java coffee cup icon at
system tray.

The problem might be the applet call, make a minimised test
case of your 'internal URL' that both fails *and* validates[1],
then post it here, or on Geocities (inside a .ZIP) or similar.

Was this ever resolved? I'm having a similar problem with JDK 1.5
