Job ads, off-topic in comp.lang.c++, give the impression of an recruiter
that is either technically clueless, or abusive and irresponsible, or
both. In any case, a company you do not want to work with! There are
dozens of *.jobs.* newsgroups where they belong. By posting in this
manner you declare to the entire world that you just do not care enough
or respect the users of comp.lang.c++ enough to follow ordinary
courtesy.

See the article titled "Welcome to comp.lang.c++! Read this first."
posted semiweekly in this newsgroup or at:

This is only about US$24-30K per year.
It isn't a living wage in Toronto, CA or anywhere else in North America.
This "job offer" must be a SCAM.
Please ignore it.

Applying the C++ rules it has to be
C++ +

:)

That must be why, upon seeing this advertisement, I rushed to
the airport and told the ticket clerk, "I need to buy passage
on a flight to."

Topicality aside, that's a tremendously small compensation for a C++ developer,
especially given the additional multidisciplinary requirements for the job.
They'll probably eventually come to this conclusion on their own, but you might
want to explain to your client that there's a difference in salary between what
they're looking for and an assistant manager at K-mart. They might want to start
the base at what they're offering as total comp.

But if your performance is really really high, and the performance of the
company is really really high, you could conceivably make as much as US
$60K!

It is actually quite possible to live in Toronto on that kind of money.
Your exchange rate is outdated, but regardless of that the buying power of
$40kCDN in Canada is about the same as the buying power of $40kUS in the
US.

My guess is that the company has two conflicting desires: to get a
qualified programmer, and to get a cheap programmer. If experience is any
indication, they'll opt for the cheap programmer (lots of them to be found
here for the price they're paying) and regret it later.

If you're looking at the price of a loaf of bread or a pair of pants, I agree.
If you're looking at the price of a car, a $20k car in the US costs $30k in
Canada, so the exchange rate does bite you. The same goes for appliances,
electronics, etc. The relative cost of living may be similar, but your
disposable income takes a beating.

Have you seen the rents in Toronto?

Yeah, actually I charge rent in Toronto. :) What I do know is that last
year (my first full calendar year self-employed) I earned something close
to the bottom end of that $40-50K range. My monthly home-related expenses
(mortgage, utilities, property tax, insurance, and renovations) less the
rent I take in leaves me paying over $1500 per month. Okay, my car is paid
off, but it's easy to find a decent place to live plus buy a car for under
$1500. And yes, I get some tax breaks both as a landlord and as a
contractor, but on the other hand I paid out over $4000 for required
software and hardware, which I think evens things out again. I don't go
out a lot or spend much on myself, but the point is I'm living quite
happily in that income bracket.

Hmmm, my impression (which may admittedly be outdated) was that a $20k car
in the US would cost about $23k here, higher for sure, but not as much as
the exchange rate would account for. Let's see, Chrysler PT Cruiser base
model: $18K US, $24K CDN. Looks like we're both off by a bit.
They'll get what they deserve. :)

Absolutely. It's unfortunate for the other employees who will be expected
to make up the shortage though.
