Learning Eclipse

Hi all,

Newcomer here so please play fair, After a talk with some Adobe Flex
guru's I've started to fire up and play with the Eclipse IDE, but as
you can imagine it's a bit daunting for beginners.

I primarily code in xhtml and css; is it possible to tailor Eclipse
for this, and any idea how to install new plugins or do i just copy
them into the plugin dir?

You can read the help files in eclipse. It took me around 15 minutes
to feel comfortable enough to start working on Eclipse. I am not sure
how much time would it take for one to get the feel of how good
Eclipse is in terms of CSS/XHTML/Javascript.

I haven't used flex, but in Eclipse I have not come across any plugin
which provides GUI/Wizard to manage CSS/XHTML. WTP (eclipse plugin)
provides help(intelligence) in the sense that you can press ctrl+space
to get list of styles that is applicable or used in CSS.
I think it also provides a limited help for Javascript.
As far as XHTML is concerned I guess it would perform Validation. I am
not sure about it though. There are few other third party plugin
providers who might have come up with something extra, but then you
would have to search for them and see what exactly they do.

Usually yes, but not always. Plugin provider would(should) mention how
exactly to install the plugin.

Most of the time, the plugin will provide an ‘update URL’, which you can
enter into the search for new features:

Help -> Software Updates -> Find and install -> Search for new features
to install -> New Remote Site...

Then hitting next will find the plugin and everything is automated.
This is the preferred way, since that way it is easy to remove plugins too.

BTW, if you have questions specific about eclipse, you can ask them in
the eclipse.newcomer newsgroup on news.eclipse.org.
