make install prefix= patch for 1.8.1?

I noticed in the archive that a couple of people patched 1.6.x so that
you can do the following:
./configure --prefix=/usr
make install prefix=/opt/ruby

Has anyone made a patch for 1.8.1? I'm trying to build a Slackware
package and this would be very helpful.

You should use DESTDIR=/opt/ruby instead.
