Maximum Heap Size

I am looking at going 64bit hardware/os/vm and was wondering what
kinds of maximum heap size (-Xmx) you will see under these conditions.
Is this maximum going to be limited by the OS? What VMs are out
there that will work with windows Server 2003 (64bit)? Has anyone
tried this? What is it like? There seemed to be some concern that if
the Heap was too big the GC would be putzy.

CPU OS VM Max Mem
Itanium Windows Server 2003(Enterprise) 1.4 ?
Itanium Windows Server 2003(DataCenter) 1.4 ?
Itanium Windows Server 2003(Enterprise) 1.5(beta) ?
Itanium Windows Server 2003(DataCenter) 1.5(beta) ?

Also,
CPU OS VM Max Mem
AMD64(Opteron) Windows Server 2003(Enterprise) 1.4 ?
AMD64(Opteron) Windows Server 2003(DataCenter) 1.4 ?
AMD64(Opteron) Windows Server 2003(Enterprise) 1.5(beta) ?
AMD64(Opteron) Windows Server 2003(DataCenter) 1.5(beta) ?

Also, interested in hearing about 64bit experiences with Linux,
Solaris etc.

I run DBMS client application using JDK 1.5.0 (64-bit), AMD Opteron and
SuSe Linux 8. The client AMD machine had 4G memory and I set up Xmx=4g
It worked OK. Comparing with 32-bit JDK 1.4.2 it performed about 25% better.
