new version of Ubuntu Linux

it is a 700 mb download. The servers are swamped.

when you are done, you will need to burn a bootable CD from the ISO
image. see http://mindprod.com/jgloss/cdburning.html

Ubuntu can be run three ways:
1. boot from CD without install.
2. run as a Windows app
3. install on its own partitions.

I believe it comes with Java pre-installed or at least with a stub
that installs it with a click or two.

I run Ubuntu and I don't think the Java installed by default was
satisfactory for me. There is a package that has Sun's Java 1.3, but if
you want 1.6 you need to build the package yourself or just install the
JDK using the provided script. Either way it isn't difficult.

The default java compiler installed (with almost all linux distors)
would be "gcj" -> I find it very annoying. But due to licensing
restrictions, default installations cannot install a sun version (at
least not yet).

Java 6 is now available as part of the ubuntu repository. You should
install it directly form there.

Use bittorrent to download. Its the most efficient way to download
huge linux distributions.
I downloaded it in 12 minutes the other day. Must not be swamped any
more :)
