Nub question - were to begin?

So I'm experienced with C++/VB, however after reading a few articles
about the major push for business independence on using scripts -
mainly perl, php - I need to pick this up.

Do I need a compiler? Is there any free ones? I'll be picking up a book
later this week, however I was going to stop by and drop a line - don't
want to sit down w/ a book just to find out I'm going to need to aquire
a 1,5k piece of software. -_-

You need an interpreter, which is free (and offered for nearly any
platform). There are hundreds of modules on CPAN which extend Perl and
are also free.
