--------
ABSTRACT
--------
Everyone knows how successful the Apache webserver and servlet container
(Tomcat) have become. Close to 70% of all webservers on the Internet use
Apache. In addition to http servers and servlet containers, the Apache
Software Foundation (ASF) has supported other projects that implement
pieces of J2EE such as JSP, Tag Libraries, and a Web services stack.
Now, the ASF has targeted application servers with an open-source,
Apache-licensed (BSD-flavored) implementation of the J2EE specification
called GERONIMO.
GERONIMO builds upon the many Java projects at the Apache Software
Foundation and brings together leading members of the Castor, JBoss,
MX4J and OpenEJB communities. The GERONIMO project is committed to
certifying the implementation as fully J2EE compliant and of the
same caliber as BEA's WebLogic and IBM's WebSphere, which are both
widely used application servers in the corporate world.
