Parsing XML into PHP to insert into a MySQL DB

Is this easily done. I've been asked to do this using xml_set_character_data_handler() in PHP. I have then got to insert this data into a MySQL DB. I have used a script from uk.php.net to print out this data, but it's in an array.

Can anyone here point me in the right direction of parsing XML into PHP and then seperating each element to insert the data into a MySQL DB.
