PDF Save Option

I have a very simple question.

How do you get a link or button on a webpage to save a pdf file.

I have a set of html pages with the option to download a pdf version. When
you click a button or link I want the file to save, not open in the browser.
This needs to be universal so a change to local PC settings is of no use.

It seems that it is impossible to do in html so some form of script seems to
be the answer.

Nope. It depends how the user's browser is configured, though you could
make some effort to persuade the server to send the file as an unkown type.
