i've looked on cpan at the hundred or so modules dealing with pdfs, but

Try comp.text.pdf.

I can't see how the question is inappropriate. I have no answer to give
myself, but this certainly seems like the right place to ask if anyone knows
of a Perl module. It's not like he's asking how to do it; he's only asking
if there is a module that can. He may have better luck in comp.text.pdf, but
there's no guarantee.

WADR, Matt, clpm wouldn't have been my first choice among Perl-related
groups. Perhaps comp.lang.perl.modules would be closer to being a proper
group in which to pose the OP's question.

i can see how you'd think that
Personally, I'm not aware of a Perl module that does what the OP seeks.
OTOH, I haven't looked, as the OP claimed to have performed an extensive
search. Furthermore, he did not state clearly in his first post the problem
he is trying to solve, with sufficient details for a Perl expert to be able
to give him meaningful guidance.

how much clearer would i need to have been?
I recommended comp.text.pdf because that community, ISTM, is more conversant
in the problems of editing the contents of a PDF.

again, i see your point
Regardless of my opinions of which group is appropriate, I'll post my
recommendations here.
finally!

Michael, please navigate to www.accesspdf.com, where you'll find command
line tools that may be suitable for your task.

i went there, and it appears i may find somethign i can use there. thank
you!
The article "Processing PDF
using Grep or Sed " might give you some ideas. Lacking a Perl module to do
what you wish to do, I expect you should be able to put together a Perl
module that would employ Pdftk to tidy up the PDF, edit the PDF, and repair
the resulting damage, e.g, broken XREF table.

all i want to do is (as i've said) add or change an exisiting pdf's
header/footer
Having said (written) that, I'm pursuaded that comp.text.pdf is the better
place for you to get expert advice on PDF. When you have a real Perl problem
associated with your development of a solution, clpm is your place.

thanks for the help, wordy as it was! and happy new year to you, too!

I'm not faulting you for suggesting that he look elsewhere for help. I'm
ready to concede that other forums may be better suited, but that's not to
say that this one isn't. I just objected to your telling him that he needs
to read the posting guidelines and, essentially, that he shouldn't waste the
time of people here. The thread only goes off topic because you know of an
off-topic solution. I'd still be interested in hearing whether what he was
asking can be done in Perl, as I have to hack away at pdfs every once in a
blue moon so I tend to watch discussions like these.

Happy New Year, nonetheless!

Right. That's exactly what I need to do. I'm sorry to see your bruised ego
got the better of you.

Your comments were inappropriate to this poster and if you don't like being
told so, well too bad. Next time you have an off-topic answer please keep it
to yourself it it bothers you so much to know off-topic things, but you're
grasping at straws to justify your position.
