request failed HTTP status 417

I wrote a web service and a seperate client program that
works fine on the local machine. When I deploy the
service to an internet host and try to use the client
(after updating the web reference, of course), I get a
status 417.

The test code generated by the web service works fine
from the browser window. Its my client program that
returns the status 417.
