Ruby on pre-X Mac OS?

Hi!

While translating Chris Pike's "Learn to Program" I came across the
statement that one seemingly cannot install Ruby on Mac OS versions
before Mac OS X. Can anybody falsify that?

No builtin gcc compiler for pre Mac OS X, we could pre-compile it, but
you certainly couldn't get modules or anything like that.
