Scala programming language

I just discovered the Scala programming language.

In this group I have previously discussed Ocaml vs. Ruby programming
language as they both have some very interesting aspects.

The Scala language seems to be inspired by both Ruby and the statically
typed languaged functional programming languages such as OCaml.

http://scala.epfl.ch/index.html

There are direct references to Ruby

http://scala.epfl.ch/docu/rationale.html

Unfortunately Scala seems to target the Java runtime and thus does not
benefit from OCamls high performance implementation.

Bugger, the volume of Ruby has grown to the point where I can no longer keep
track.
On a positive note I'm not the only finding Scala potentially relevant :)
