Search MS Word and PDF from java

I am looking for a possibilities for a document(MS Word and PDF) content
search from
java.
1. Are there any platform independent libraries exists.
2. I heard of MS planning to have XML interface for Word?

Use multivalent http://multivalent.sourceforge.net/ for getting a pdf
content and lucene http://jakarta.apache.org/lucene/index.html as a
search engine

Take a look at Dieselpoint. http://dieselpoint.com

It's a generalized all-Java search engine with a good API. It handles both
Word and PDF using pure Java.
