Search & Replace a string amongst multiple files of any type/extension

Hi All,
I am a new member to this forum. I am supposed to build a java application that can search and replace a string amongst multiple files in a folder of any type. This type can include normal text based types like .pl, .bat, .java, etc and also formatted types like word, excel, etc.
Guys plz give me headsup on how to go about.
