socket wrapper

can someone point me to a good, well-known socket wrapper? low-level socket
programming is fun and all, but at some point i'll want to save time and
energy and just use something easier.

Writing your own, in such a way that the same application code can be used
in - at the very least - both Windows and Linux, makes for an interesting
and not too difficult project.
