Sub contact fees

I've been asked to submit an hourly fee to work as a sub contracter.

I've got a fair idea what I would need to charge as an hourly fee when
working independently, anyone know how sub contract rates relate to
those fees?

I charge the same regardless of whether it's sub-contracted or working
directly for the client.

The same. If you're using their kit in their office with their power,
perhaps knock of 15%.

I charge them the same. Why should there be a difference?
Consider to let them be you for the project(s). Easier in administration and
probably better for the profits.

Overheads like acquisition, promotion, risk coverage etc are factored
into a regular hourly price, they are not applicable when working as a
sub.

Sounds reasonable. What difference, as percentage, do you suggest?

After having asked for a few quotes from local firms the differences are
bigger than I thought.

http://www.btobonline.com/webPriceIndex/ suggests E100/$112/£70 for
html/css/graphics work per hour.

The quotes I got from local firms range between E37/$42/£26 and
E100/$112/£70 per hour at the top end.

I was inclined to set a base price of E80, -20% for sub contracted work,
comments?

I'm looking for people who have worked as a sub for some guidance on
what's reasonable. I'm inclined to deduct 20%.

sounds reasonable. I expect that sort of figure (15% to 20%) for subbed
out work. Nearer 5% if it's just a finders fee.

what will the market stand?

I realise that's what you're asking, but there are a whole ton of variables.

I know one firm that insists on 40% but the work is good and the rates are
high to start with.

The work is for a company that specializes in usability and
accessibility, they do quite a bit of their work for the government. So
I feel that I don't need to compete with the director's nephew with his
copy of Frontpage.
