"The C Standard" in book form is here!

J

Jack Klein

Many people, including me, like having hard copy books at hand, along
with electronic editions.

When I first heard of this book several months ago, I pre-ordered a
copy. It arrived from Bookpool today.

The book is an impressive hard cover, printed in large and very
readable type.

The first section is the rationale, about 212 pages with its own
index. The second section is the standard itself, complete with
appendices and index. TC1 to C99 is included.

There is a one page forward by Dennis Ritchie and a four page
introduction by Francis Glassborow.

The particulars:

Title: The C Standard
Author: British Standards Institution
ISBN: 0470845732

List price is 34.95UK, 65.00US.

Since it has arrived at Bookpool it is most likely available now from
other sources as well.

<slightly OT>

A similar edition with the C++ standard is due out in about a month.

Wow, that sounds great. Would be very nice to have as a collectors item,
too.

Khm. How many trucks deliver it? I mean what size is it?

I picked it up from the Heffers store opposite Trinity College
in Cambridge (that's in England) last Saturday. I'm not sure
how long the three copies they had had been there then. It was
34.99 GBP (which is a small sum when put in relation to how much
I usually spend on books).

Cheers,

Textbook size, several kilos. Can't say for sure how many trucks, it
was on my doorstep when I got home. But it doesn't overtax even my
aging muscles...

Great, thanx. I guess I have to get one.

This rationale part... what does it contain (as a picture)? Like why were
some the decisions made or...?

Slightly larger than one volume of Knuth, next to which it is sitting on
my shelf.
I'm slightly disappointed by the binding, but nevertheless very happy to
have bought it.

Ahh, I live about 1/2 a mile from that Heffers! I might buy the C++
standard one, the rationale might be interesting (I still want to know
the rationales for the decisions behind ADL, template instantiation,
export, two phase name lookup, etc., that aren't covered in D&E).

Will the C++ one include the TC1 changes to the standard?

Not counting pages, it's slightly thinner (!) than "C
Unleashed", but three and-a-bit times thicker than K&R.

You forgot Melbourne Australia (voted the most livable city
in the world you know :)).

I'd expect to pay ~$150.00 AUD at that rate <g>.

This is one book I'll definately order - I like to read in bed <g>.

Thanks for the information Jack.

OK hide it under your mattress and have fun. Bookpool is the best source
for technical books I've found, by the way.

| Nonsense! Everybody knows Adelaide is the most livable city.

Still reeling about the Formula 1 Grand Prix heh! <G>

Cheers.

And by "K&R", you mean K&R2. I was recently shocked to visit my
university bookstore and find that K&R2 is more than twice the
thickness of K&R1. Of course, it has useful information in the extra
pages, too (such as the standard library functions); but it doesn't
look nearly as elegant when it's thicker than many novels! :)

I have had this since 11/08/2003 pre-ordered from ACCU conference in April
2003
The C++ one is 2 days late, it should have been here 2 days ago.

Take a look at the page counts. Later editions of K&R2 are
printed on thicker paper to make it look bigger.
