Hi Larry,

There're lots of possible reasons that may cause this exception. The
following article covers general possibilities.

http://www.aspspider.com/resources/Resource170.aspx

By default, ASP.NET membership uses the following connection string:

<connectionStrings>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data
source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated
Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User
Instance=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
</connectionStrings>

You can find it in the machine.config in the
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG folder.

We can overwirte the setting by adding following membership configuration
in the web.config of ASP.NET application:

<configuration>
<connectionStrings>
<add name="MyDB" connectionString="..." />
</connectionStrings>
<system.web>
... authentication & authorization settings ...

<membership defaultProvider="CustomizedProvider">
<providers>
<add name="CustomizedProvider"
type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider"
connectionStringName="MyDB"/>
</providers>
</membership>
</system.web>
</configuration>

Reference:
http://aspnet.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/120705-1.aspx

I suggest you manually attach the database and use the custom connection
string to see if it works. It's also recommended to go through all the
parts in the above article. This is an excellent article regarding ASP.NET
membership, roles and profile.

I see you've been fortunate enough to receive an answer here, but this
still applies:

There was no way for you to know it (except maybe by browsing through
some of the previous questions before posting yours - always a
recommended practice), but this is a classic (COM-based) asp newsgroup.
ASP.Net is a different technology from classic ASP. While you may be
lucky enough to find a dotnet-savvy person here who can answer your
question, you can eliminate the luck factor by posting your question to
a newsgroup where the dotnet-savvy people hang out. I suggest

microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.aspnet.

There are also forums at www.asp.net where you can find a lot of people
to help you.
