So what is the code I need to trigger the windows media player plugin
to open?

Just link to whatever media you want to play:

Play me!

Assuming your server is set up correctly, and serving WMV files with the
correct MIME type, it will play in whatever media player the user wants
to use with that type of file.

play movie

After that it is a browser configuration issue.

Bu Bu But, the OP specified *Windows* media player.

You damn mac people, always insisting on something completely different ;-)

Why do you assume that everybody has one? Or what is the question actually?

Does " plugin/within the browser" not mean anything?
Your method only opens the user's default media player outside of the
browser.

I know how to do it using flash like with youtube stuff.
What would I need to change to open windows media player instead?

I thought the question was plain and simple enough even for an idiot
to understand.

If you go to youtube and don't have the flash player plugin, what
happens? You don't see jack shit right?

So what do I need to do to turn on the windows player "WITHIN" the
browser itself as it is done for flash?

Who are you calling an idiot?

If you don't have flash, right. There's no need for the Windows media
player to see youtube movies; last time I looked I didn't have Windows
media player, for instance, and I do see all of youtube with my flash
plugin.
So what do I need to do to turn on the windows player "WITHIN" the
browser itself as it is done for flash?

A very plain and simple question for you, once again: why do you assume
that everybody has Windows media player? That is, not only all Windows
users, but also all Mac users, Linux users, BSD users, etcetera?

Can we please forget about who has what and just answer the damn
question please?

Just maybe I am wanting to do it this way to give users options.
Like they do for when users have different means of getting online
like between dial up and broadband or now even cell phones.

What about rubber boots? Do you want to ignore those who have a good old
pair of boots they want to connect with?

:D

Seriously, the best way "to give users options" is to let happen what is
their default action. And in no browser ther is no check box for "Let
richard choose what's best for me."

Oops, I'm in the mood tonight 8^]

I'd need to buy me a PC with a copy of Windows on it. And I assure you -
that change ain't happening any time soon.

Seriously, what part of "not everyone has WMP installed" do you not
understand?

I'm beginning to wonder. It's been a while since I've seen anyone as
unwilling to learn as him.

Welll duhhhhhh. Not everyone has a mac or has linux either.
The vast majority of PC's in the world has windows.
According to stats at my site, about 85% or more use either IE or FF.

I don't see what's the connection between those having winD'OHs and
those having FF.

Idiots? I like any discussion about such. I belong to a club for idiots
and we are very proud; we watch for any derogatory comments about us.

Have you any references for the grammatical and spelling abilities of
idiots? Please do not assume that mistakes with 'e's fall under the
radar of idiots. It is a little known fact among non-idiots that idiots
are acutely aware* of 'e's and make less mistakes involving them than
non-idiots.

You might argue that your mistake with the plural of 'e' was really a
general mistake about the use of the apostrophe (its use being to
indicate possession and contraction but never plurality)

* Why this is, is the subject of my present investigation into the
brains of earthlings. I have written a small summary of my conclusions
with some indication of the evidence in a paper called "e-idiots" - I
thought it a sort of catchy title and a little out of the box, having
nothing really to do with the internet; increasing the chances of sale.
If anyone would like a copy, please send $US15.75.

Hmm. Grammatically I believe your sentence should read:

LOL! Isn't it a law of usenet or something, that anyone who criticizes
someone else's grammar will invariably make at least one mistake of
his or her own?

Not quite.

1. An "e" is one thing

2. An "e's" is another

and

3. An "'e's" is yet another thing.

Not even an idiot would be accused of putting two references to the
fifth letter of the alphabet in "triggering". They might be accused of
putting in two instances of the fifth letter. 3 is the most formally
correct one as in:

There are two 'e's in:

See how it rains so hard

and there are two 'E's IN:

SEE HOW IT RAINS SO HARD

There are no "e's" in either of the above.

Which part of "it's a browser configuration issue" did you fail to
understand.

Hint: You have absolutely no control over where or even if the users views a
video. You can not even find out if a certain plugin is installed in a
certain browser.
Just maybe I am wanting to do it this way to give users options.

Your users *ALREADY HAVE* the options, and they have exercised them. You
don't need to jump through any hoops to attempt to reproduce what the user
has already done.

Then again on reviewing this and a related thread maybe jumping through
hoops might keep you safely away from said users :)
