Windows xp sp2 has several old versions of java installed.
Is it ok to uninstall those?

Hi Ivan,

Yes. If you still want java support you should probably uninstall all java
and re-install the newest version.

Since Java circa 1.6_10 the new generation plugin has provided multi-version
JVM support which maybe useful for multiple Applets with different Java
versions on the same web page. Also as an Applet can ask for specific
versions of a JRE it might be worth keeping some of the old versions around
if you have the diskspace? Perhaps the latest versions of 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6?

Off topic, but JRE's are backwards compatible. The latest JRE should
be able to run code compiled with earlier SDK's.

I'd call that "upwards compatible" but no matter. What I was alluding to was
Product X being able to require/demand/certify/explictly specify a 1.4 JVM
while everyone else can run 6,

I agree with the word "should", since in reality they are not.
