UTF-16 -> utf-8

I have the following problem.
When I mark a chinese character on a website and transfer this
character via a bookmarklet to another website, it is encoded as
utf-16.
However, I need UTF-8 as encoding for the other website.
Can I force a conversion ?
What would I need to add ?
