Wierd IE Problem - broken images and bizzare text output

M

Marc

http://www.horizonlt.com/

I'm having a problem with this website. It's fine in Mozilla, but for
some reason in Internet Explorer random images are broken and text such
as that below often appears above the page.

This only seems to be a problem in Internet Explorer (one of it's quirks
I guess) does anyone know what is causing it?

With the text below, when you look at the source, it displays as mostly
boxes - is this a problem to do with my character set? Should I change it?

Please someone help me!

Thanks,
Marc

PS. Example text - note the HTTP headers being displayed at the end...

I'm having a problem with this website. It's fine in Mozilla, but for
some reason in Internet Explorer random images are broken and text such
as that below often appears above the page.

Okay, this problem has been fixed - it was to do with IE not
understanding a mimetype where firefox did. The text was the actual
image output... :)

I still have one problem now though - the menu on the left does not
always show correctly in IE - it should display a load of menu items,
with an animated icon below. Sometimes the icon is cut off, other times
it doesn't display at all. This appears to be an IE issue again,
Firefox is happy, and refreshing appears to change what is displayed so
I don't think it's a CSS issue.

Any ideas?

This only seems to be a problem in Internet Explorer (one of it's quirks I
guess) does anyone know what is causing it?

With the text below, when you look at the source, it displays as mostly
boxes - is this a problem to do with my character set? Should I change
it?

Please someone help me!

Thanks,
Marc

PS. Example text - note the HTTP headers being displayed at the end...

Shows ok here, including the menu on the left having vertical text-image

Also the ani-gif is ok (shows as top half of a building with a moving flag
on top)

Using IExplore V6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519, cipher strength 128
bit....

Could you try other sections (use the horizontal navigation below the
date) and refresh a few times please?

Marc,

OK, I can reproduce the problem, FWIW.

I'm on a dial-up line. When it fails (which is intermittent), here's
what I see:
- The entire left-column navigation list appears. The text UNDER the
current-page image appears, and the image starts to be displayed. The
footer is visible in the correct location.
- Either while the image is displaying, or after it is done, the
footer seems to jump upward, aligning itself just after the lowest
content in either the center or right column. At that point any content
in the left column is truncated at the footer position. This may
include the current-page title, the image above it, and even the last
item or so in the navigation list.

Net: IE seems to display the page correctly, then repositions the footer
and chops off the bottom of the page.

I could not do anything to make it fail reliably.

Do you have any idea why it does this? I have a 'clear: both;'
statement on the footer, and if that were the problem, I would have
thought the rest of the menu would show below the footer? It doesn't
make any sense to me... any ideas?

The div#updates is absolutely positioned, which results in it falling
over the footer. Better put it in the source after the left column and
before the content, and float it right.

(This is only a problem when the left column is shorter than the right
one, which happened when the gif didn't load on the bottom left)

In my IE, that image (and the 'home' text below it) didn't load at
first, but appeared after I individually loaded the image. I'm not
sure why it didn't load in the first place, maybe it has to do with
the clear:left on it? If two 'clears' (#section_icon and #footer)
touch in IE, this often causes problems. AFAICS (not tested)
#section_icon doesn't need a clear property at all.

Weird thing: I can't reproduce the image not loading after clearing my
cache and calling the page again.

Okay, I think I see what causes it now. IE doesn't redraw the page,
and the image dimensions come in too late, the image is loaded after
the footer takes its place. (problem only happens on pages with
shorter content) Not sure why IE doesn't redraw the page, but the
solution might just be to give the dimensions of the image in the HTML
already.

Yeah, I knew this was a problem - I'll have a play with floating, but I
couldn't get it working how I wanted before, so resorted to absolute
positioning.

I'll remove the clear from #section_icon and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for your help!

I'll do this and see if it makes a difference - all the section icons
are the same size anyway.

Tried these menu items as requested:

swimming : displays correctly, even after refreshing many times
health clubs: displayed correctly, only one fault out of many refreshes
play centre: displays correctly, even after refreshing many times
membership: displays correctly, even after refreshing many times
fitness classes: displays correctly, even after refreshing many times
parties: displays correctly, even after refreshing many times
sauna : displays correctly, even after refreshing many times
activities: displays correctly, only one fault out of many refreshes
functions: displays correctly, even after refreshing many times
creche: displays correctly, even after refreshing many times

(many refreshes means say about 50)

The 2 faults I have seen kind of "clipped" the page, shifting the bottom up.
(best description for it was from Chris Beall at Tuesday, January 03, 2006
12:15 AM)

I forgot to mention: I'm on a broadband connection.
(telenet.be)
Already mentioned my browser version.

Also tried left menu items afterwards, giving about identical failure ratio.
Looks like this is going to be a pretty hard one to find.... :-(

If any other requests just ask.
