xml layout

how can i format xml? any tools (preferably on unix)?

for example: let's say i have broken html
i clean it up (into xhtml), but i want it formatted in a hierarchical
manner. the tool should be able to distinct inline and block-level markup.

i tried emacs and xae, but it doesn't always work. very strange problem:
sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. i'm getting afraid of the
power of emacs ;-), it's kind of fragile...

i tried xxe and morphon but they don't change the document when saved (i
mean the indentation, the content is changed off course)
any tips?
