XML suitability

We have typical hierarchical business reports
with headers, group / sub-group totals etc

Is XML a suitable format for creating such reports
(we use dotnet / C#)

Are there free good viewers / tools for printing available
(proper positioning in printing & pagination is very important)
data may include images also
