this should give you lots to have a whinge about:
http://moreshit.usenetshit.info/adw/

zip file of it all:
http://moreshit.usenetshit.info/adw/adw.zip [552k]

extract it with "include original paths" so the files are in the right
place. it'll all be in a directory "adw"

requires php so it wont work on your computer unless it has a server
with php support. .htaccess file included so the html files are parsed
as php. if your server doesn't let you do fun 'n giggly things like that
then change all files and references from .html to .php

probably has a few errors as its a bit quick and dirty.

Super.

Of course it won't work on my computer: this creaky old box is just
about getting by as it is. Obsolete doesn't begin to describe it. My
"network" is two computers connected by a USB hub. I guess that make
ol' Nellie the "server."

However, this page is quite slick and worth poking around in, for the
educational value if nothing else.

Someone else suggested just making all my image pages with menus on
them. The main reason I didn't want to do that was because maintenance
would be a nightmare. Every time I'd add another item, I'd have to go
and update several dozen pages. (The list on the menu was only a partial
listing of all pages.)

Sooo... Altogether too early this morning, I downloaded HTML-Kit,
includeHTML and Make-a-file-list. Very Slick, indeed. Beats the pants
off farting around with Visual Studio. (My version of VS is set up for
C++, and doesn't have any HTML objects on board.) Looks like
preprocessing might be the way to go after all.

I'll take a closer look at the Brucie Files (like The X-Files?) and see
what gets my fancy all tickled.

That would have been me.

No, you miss the point entirely. You only have *one* menu file. That one
file is included (server side) on every image page.

If you add another item you simply update the *one* menu file, just like you
should also need to update only *one* CSS file.

Uh, well I've been exploring brucie's offering for hours now, and can't
get it to work on my host, much less ol' Nellie. Something seems to be
missing, like the ability to parse the includes.

However, includeHTML, which is listed on the FAQ's page you sent me to,
gives HTML-Kit preprocessing functionality which definitely ameliorates
the chore of updating dozens of pages.

Remember when HTML was simple?

After that it went complicated. Things didn't settle down again until
fairly recently. The pure CSS approach is so much _simpler_ than the
3.2 era, especially if you borrow pre-existing CSS from somewhere
else. There's rarely a real need to write it.

Ya think?

I've been pounding on the page setup that brucie gave me since
yesterday, and I *think* I have it working the way I want it to without
the PHP includes.

(Sorry, brucie: my current host doesn't have the relevant software
available to my account(s), and I'm leery of adding any executables to
his server. I suppose if HE gets excited about doing PHP himself, he'll
put his own software on, and that's fine with me. Meanwhile...)

I will post a link when I get a few more pages updated.

I'm beginning to see the logic in the CSS syntax, although the way the
W3C reference is written it's all ancient Babylonian to me. I suppose
there might be a copy of "CSS for Dummies" at the library; it would be a
big help. If "CSS for Dummies" hasn't been written yet, then one of you
guys should hop to it, ASAP.

Checked Amazon.com. Yes, "Cascading Style Sheets for Dummies" has been
published, but according to the customer reviews it could benefit from a
make-over by a spell-checker, your 5th grade English teacher and those
five gay guys.

My website is still in process, but here's a look at the work so far:

http://www.red-death.com/~beadles/index.html

By the way, brucie, thanks for the tiny star decoration on the corner of
the menu box. When I first viewed your page, I didn't see it: Netscape
took it and stuck it up in the far right-hand upper corner of the page.
IE doesn't seem to have this problem and the image appears where it's
supposed to.
