[ANN] Programming Ruby available for pre-order

D

Dave Thomas

Folks:

it looks as if my original announcement got lost somewhere, so here it
is again:

I'm pleased to announce that we are now taking pre-orders for the
second edition of Programming Ruby (the PickAxe).

You can order online at
http://pragmaticprogrammer.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page5.html.
Information about the book is available at
http://www.pragmaticprogrammer.com/titles/ruby/index.html.

We're offering the paper book, a fully hyperlinked PDF version, and a
combo pack that contains the two. Despite the fact that the new book is
more than 250 pages bigger than the old, we've managed to keep the
price about the same. We've also found some good shipping options for
folks buying the book outside the US.

The book will ship from our store in the first week in October.
Bookstores and places such as Amazon will have it some time after that
(it takes some time to percolate through the channels). We'll ship
books in the order we receive orders, so pre-order now and be one of
the first to have a shiny new PickAxe!

Cheers

Dave

I'm really happy to see that there will be a PDF version of the book
available. I've been looking to replace more and more of my programming
books with digital copies, and this will be a wonderful addition to the
set. My girlfriend will particularly thank you for making room on the
shelf for her books :)

Thanks so much,

Brian Wisti

Just ordered the combo-pak.

Question for clarification: Some of the messaging seems to indicate that
the pdf can be downloaded within minutes of placing an order and other
messaging (I think it was in the confirming email) seemed to imply that
pdfs would be ready for download on Oct 3rd. (?)

I hope you're using African Swallows and not English Swallows....I don't
think they could carry a book of that size....;)

I thought the first one was free?

It was. There has been extensive discussion about this in the past,
including the possibility that when Pickaxe III comes out (probably
for Ruby 2.0), Pickaxe II will be made available for free. But the
reality is that this costs quite a bit of time and effort by Dave, and
he deserves to make money from the publication of the book.

(Speaking of which, I'm going to be ordering one book and one book+pdf
-- plus the book I get as an early registrant at Ruwiki :)

The first edition of Programming Ruby is available for free in digital
format. It is this second edition that is *not* free.

Thanks, Dave... I'm going to go place my order right now!

This cumbersome cart software we're having to use doesn't let us
customize the message on a per-product basis. The PDF will be available
at the same time that the book ships.

Sorry for any confusion.

"Well it doesn't matter.
A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut."

So I guess a three pound book would be right out, yes.
African, maybe...

I just ordered it, thanks.

But what I dislike in your shop is that my orders I typed in aren't
acknowledged. I would like to get a summary of my orders in front before I
confirm them. So that I can still correct small mistakes.
Additionally the form forced my to give in a State/Province, but there is
actually no such thing in Germany, at least you don't put it normally on
your mail. Maybe an adopting form for each country would be nice :)

One more question, the double package or only the pdf, is it exclusively for
your shop or will for instance Amazon or any other online book shop also
have this offer?

We've been battling this software ever since we went online with it: to
be honest if we'd known then what we know now we'd just have written
our own. However, with Visa and Mastercard getting every more paranoid,
we felt it was better to go with a hosted solution at a big provider
such as Verio rather than do it ourselves. In terms of security, that's
been a good decision. In terms of functionality, it could be better, I
agree.

We're the only folks selling the PDF.

UK-based rubyists (or even European ones) might like to know that
amazon.co.uk has the PickaxeII listed with 30% off RRP, i.e. £22.36
The book is announced for end of October.

I have no interest in amazon and I look forward to reading the new
edition but I can wait a bit more for the book. Being on a tight budget,
a lower price on the book and less shipping charges are an important
factor.

Hi Dave,

I would have liked to order an extra license for the PDF (I ordered
the combo), but wasn't given the oppurtunity on the order form.
How (il)legal is it to install the PDF on a colleague's machine ?

Cheers,

Mmmm, spotted that yesterday and I am a bit torn. Part of me wants to
support them by direct ordering the book / pdf combo and the
cheapskate part wants to get the book from Amazon UK and just buy the
PDF from the PragProg. Its why I asked in another thread if the book
would be signed (i.e. a value added version, which is an easier sell
to the wife than I want to support the authors).

Also from my limited exposure to writing[1], where you buy the
hardcopy wouldn't normally make any difference to the author. It does
for PragProg as they are self publishing and will make more money from
direct sales without the middle men.

Rob

[1] At least that is the impression I got from the royality statements
from Manning for Eclipse In Action. The royalties are based on the
published price of the book and the number of copies sold. There was
no difference between books bought directly from Manning or those
heavily discounted on say Amazon. Though there was a slightly
different percentage for ebook versions over print versions.

Nice one - should be free shipping too for mainland UK, since it's
over 19 quid.

I've been thinking hard about that. Here's the issue. In order to
protect the books while being shipped, we pay the printer a bit extra
and have our copies shrinkwrapped (the ones that go to regular
booksellers are not). Either Andy or I could sign copies we send, but
it would mean removing the shrinkwrap.

Now, we ship in either padded envelopes or in bubble wrap, but even so
you might find that a corner gets dinged without the shrinkwrap to
protect the book as it is inserted.

So, here's the question: I'd be more than happy to sign the pre-orders
I ship, and Andy would do the same. Would folks be OK with that if it
meant removing the wrap?

Alternatively, we could include with each a signed card or label that
you could insert into the book after opening it. Would that work?

Cheers
