[ANN] Programming Ruby available for pre-order

Dave Thomas

I would have liked to order an extra license for the PDF (I ordered
the combo), but wasn't given the oppurtunity on the order form.

If you'd hit the 'continue shopping' button it would have taken you
back to order additional stuff :)
How (il)legal is it to install the PDF on a colleague's machine ?

About the same as photocopying the paper book and giving your colleague
the copy :)

As a matter of policy we don't enable any of the copy protection
features of our PDFs: they are fully open. In return, we trust our
readers to do the right thing...

Cheers

So, here's the question: I'd be more than happy to sign the pre-orders
I ship, and Andy would do the same. Would folks be OK with that if it
meant removing the wrap?

Certainly for me I would be more than happy to have the wrap removed.
I've had a few books come over from the US and all have arrived intact
so I am happy to trust them. If it doesn't, hey its my own fault :)

Anyway the book is bound to arrive in better nic that the copy of the
1st Ed that I ordered from Amazon UK. The colour was very dull from a
collection of dirty marks on the cover.
Alternatively, we could include with each a signed card or label that
you could insert into the book after opening it. Would that work?

Cards are easily lost and depending on the size of your natural
signature, you might need a huge label :) Plus its extra expense to
get either of those things.

UK-based rubyists (or even European ones) might like to know that
amazon.co.uk has the PickaxeII listed with 30% off RRP, i.e. £22.36
The book is announced for end of October.

In Belgium, at current exchange rates, it's about 1.5 EUR cheaper to buy
the book/PDF combo from the PragProgs directly than to order the book from
amazon.co.uk and the PDF from the PragProgs. I guess that settles it for
me.

Cancel that. Didn't notice Global Priority Express is available, saving an
extra $8.85. That's without taxes, but that should only be a few euros.
Just for those interested...

So what's the digital equivalent of leaving your book on his desk for
a couple of days?

I'm ok with it.

We don't have any kinds of DRM in the PDFs we produce, so there's no
way to assign a license to someone else. This is a matter of policy: we
dislike crippled PDFs, and won't distribute them.

With a paper book, if you loan it to someone else, you lose the use of
it for that period. Without DRM, we have no way of enforcing the
equivalent with PDFs. We prefer to trust the folks who buy them.

And for that I am grateful, I strongly dislike DRM and had you used it
I wouldn't have bought the electronic versions of your starter kit
books. BTW I do like your system of embedding our names in the digital
book.

To me a signed copy doesn't signify. It's the book I'm after, not the
signature. (I've never understood book "collectors" who keep pristine
signed copies, that they never read for fear of damaging.)

So I'd *prefer* the bubble-wrapped version, but don't really care. Do
what's easiest.

I'm not a book collector and the book probably won't remain in pristine
condition for very long. I have read several of Dave and Andy's books
and I find them very insightful, helpful and inspiring. I would be
delighted to have a signed copy of the book.

I appreciate people even more when they show that they appreciate
others. This just makes Dave and Andy standout from the crowd of authors
in my "book".

Additionally the form forced my to give in a State/Province, but there is
actually no such thing in Germany, at least you don't put it normally on

Well, we have "Bundesländer"; I entered Schleswig-Holstein...

Happy rubying

Add another name to the list of pre-orders. From the TOC it
looks to be exactly the type of book I look for. Really
looking for word to an early X-mas present in Oct!

What about providing HTML or even plaintext?

I am constantly in my HTML ProgrammingRuby directory, grepping for stuff.
But you can't grep a PDF.

My pre-order for v2 is already with Amazon, incidentally :)

Regards,

Brian.

You may not be able to grep a PDF, but you can search within most PDF
readers. Also, there are a number of PDF-to-{HTML,plaintext,...}
converters, which you could always try.
