IE8 standalone IE7?

You could just accept my advice. No, the IE7 button will not be
suitable for testing IE7. Not a chance.

That's a PITA. Luckily, I have two machines, one that is not going to
get IE8. Still, it would be good to know WHY the button isn't suitable.
It's not a help desk and I am not in any "Windoze world." I have a
few Windows machines, as would any professional.

We know it's not a helpdesk, but some of the regulars here, like dorayme,
don't have a Windows machine. I don't have a Mac, like dorayme does, and
input from those with another OS can be very helpful.

Being a professional does not mean one has to have a bunch of different
systems. Sometimes cost is a consideration, or even room for another
machine (I just received a Windows machine from one of my clients who
doesn't want it anymore - so I know about those space considerations).

Google that or trust me. It's not IE7.

Use a virtual machine. I like VMWare.

Yes, space is a consideration, as is noise. But Windows PC's are
pretty disposable (and cheap to begin with these days), so they
shouldn't be out of reach for the average Web developer.

And you could accept my invitation to explain what that button does as
you understand it. But not a single peep out of you (who is so knowing
but untelling) on this particular matter.

I already do have a windoze box which I turn on to check for Win IE
goings on. You are proposing I get yet another to be as professional as
you? And I hope you have a number of Macs - remember, you have a
reputation to live up now, you schmuck.

Where did you get this idea about yourself? Had it long? Don't go away
now. I like having someone to be bad tempered towards. And what better
than someone who thinks so highly of himself, distributes his words with
meanness and arrogance and suddenly becomes rude (you want to see where
you started this?)

So? Try Google (or even Microsoft's site.)

You should read more carefully.

So you could have accepted my invitation to explain. Not good enough
reason in itself? It is not every day I put out such invitations. You
won't get another one.

Another flagrant misquote. I said:

"So? Try Google (or even Microsoft's site.)"

Or accept that you don't need to know everything. I mean, does it
really matter why in this case?

This is not accepting an invitation to explain. This is deciding to be a
schmuck.

But don't go away now, a gem like me needs a little buffing by rough
material in a revolving barrel.

Is *the reason for this* in your secret knowledge file? I have
instructed my men just now to hunt this file down. If you hear a sort of
shuffling sound from your filing cabinet, don't worry, I have ordered
them not to harm you in any way.

Okay dorayme I can now say this about the "Compatibility" button in IE8;
when pressed it shows the IE7 specific "Italic touching Float" bug that
I found and G Talbot documented.

example:

http://littleworksstudio.lws.lan/temp/l2340/ver2.php

Click the button and the right POOF and left floats chop off below the
EM text just as with IE7. Now IE 5-6 does not show this bug.

Long story short, I got forced into an IE8 upgrade. Even though IE is
not my default browser, I got the "problem" where the URL shortcuts get
screwed in the registry and IE's advanced settings go blank and not of
the standard registry fixes would work. After I tried to reinstall IE7 I
discover your cannot if you installed IE7 AFTER SP3! All it does is you
you a mucked up version of IE6 and IE7 will not install because of dll
version hell... &deity; I hate browsers that are integrated into the OS!
So rather than uninstall SP3 and redo everything I opted for IE8...

Now I haven't determined if the little button emulates version 7 in all
its buggy glory, but at least this very IE7 bug shows so I am encouraged.

Also Tredosoft does have a standalone IE7. Originally for when your max
version was 6...not sure if it works in reverse.

Yes, I did play with IE8 on a friend's machine and the first thing I
tested was something I knew was buggy in IE7 and yes, it showed up. But
this lone test did not convince me. However your words now encourage me
closer to a decision, good on you for this.

I know that IE8 does not disable the ability to look at IE6 (and down)
with the multiple IEs I have (well, according to my trusted friend's
advice).

So, maybe next time I fire up my winbox, I might install it and also
Chrome.

I have multipleIEs already installed 3-6 and still seams to work. My
first attempt at add a stand-alone version of 7 didn't work but well
keep fussing with it.

Chrome.

I have already. Interesting sparse interface where info-menu bits appear
as needed. Certain CSS stuff doesn't work with it like with Opera.

One example, all that is required to make a table with a static header
row and scrollable body in Gecko is:

table > tbody { overflow: auto; height: 10em; overflow-x: hidden; }

<table>
<thead>
<tr><th>Will stay static</th></tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr><td>Scrollable data</td></tr>
<tr><td>Scrollable data</td></tr>
<tr><td>Scrollable data</td></tr>
<tr><td>Scrollable data</td></tr>
...
<tr><td>Scrollable data</td></tr>
</tbody>
</table>

Even using wrappers and relative positioning on thead which will get
bug-o-rama IE7 to cooperate doesn't coax Chrome or Opera... nor IE6 but
who would hope for that one, eh?

It doesn't convince me. I suppose what it means is all you poor
web-developers now have to test in IE7, IE8, and also in
IE8-pretending-to-be-IE7 which will have a whole new set of bugs all of
its own.

But Ben, admit there is this silver lining: it is a finite and not a
viciously generating process:

There will *never ever* be a button or a facility to see what things
look like in IE8-pretending-to-be-IE7 when IE9 comes out. <g>

I'd like a button that would remove any browser ostentatiously named to
lay claim the Internet from a system. Hmmm I guess the naming wasn't too
bad a strategy, it almost worked!
