Learning HTML

No, that's arithmetic. Algebra is a branch of Mathematics - along with
geometry, calculus, and so on.

Unfortunately this concept-inflation notion that addition and so on is
somehow "mathematics" has hit this side of the pond too.

It makes the Americans believe that they are learning science.

Maybe, but the US schools require them for equation solving.

Blink, blink. The last time I solved an equation, there was no way a
calculator could have helped me with any stage of it. Except that the
calculator I showed the examiner (so he could check to see that there
wasn't a pony in the memory) was a blank sheet of paper, and I did use
that.

That's a little like saying: "All you need to learn a foreign language is
a computer translator."

Well. happily I don't know that saying.
We don't learn it that way.
You need to learn the verb conjugations, the vocabulary etc. first. Then
how to apply it. Eventually you'll learn the nuances.

Fully agree
But relying on a tool to do it for you teaches you imperfectly and too
little.

But such a tool, however imperfect, can learn you how HTML works.
WYSIWYG is a nice way to see what you are creating, and in the mean time one
can see the code which is generated.
If you don't want to make that effort, ok, admit it and rely on the
imperfect tools available and accept the imperfect consequences those
tools impose on you.

Well, what is perfect?
Many of us here grew up on those tools as far back as the early to mid 90s
and then learned their limitations. Hence the advice you're getting.
Ignore it if you will. Doesn't hurt us at all.

For me the same. I learned the limitations and imperfections as well.
Won't help you or others to whom you are giving advice.

I'm always in for advice.
I'm not pretending I know it all.

Yes, that's called a browser. I just have the file on my desktop, open
in my editor and in a Safari window. As I edit it and want to see the
effect of a change, I merely save it and refresh the browser window.
Voila - the updated version is displayed in the Safari window.

No need to do anything (like a separate app) more complicated than that.

Well, yes - Who needs a WYSIWYG editor when you have a browser that does
pretty much the same thing - only a bi differently
