need real help?

Why? Those that own and use RB know of the forum. Many of them are also
Liberty Basic fans which also has it's own forum. Besides, the guy who
wrote both languages is highly active in both forums. I don't see a need
for the duplication.

I'm only mentioning sitepoint because it is a hundred times more active
than alt.html. Without the BS and spam.

When I first read your post, I was going to reply
"I though that was what alt.html was supposed to be for".

But then I decided to actually look at the site.
Not bad. A bit slow to load, for ppl like me who have
only 24Kbaud, but so far no hint of the rampant
condescension I've seen while silently lurking here.
And some of their posts are helpful, even.

I was looking for an answer to a problem and some guy had the answer for me
that day. Within a few hours even. No bickering. No why do you want to do
that BS, no where's the URL crap. He just posted the code and it does
exactly what I want.

Another forum I had checked out, were all a bunch of Indians who were
wanting to be paid for solving a problem.
These guys at sitepoint, just solve and post.

I hardly see any spam, and connected to this is the much better
experience of using a newsreader for usenet rather than web based
forums. Perhaps why alt.html is so quiet these days is to do with a lack
of interest/knowledge in getting a newsreader rather than the BS (there
being plenty of the latter on web forums anyway?)

Instead of coming here to tell people to go elsewhere - a most puzzling,
vaguely insolent thing to do! - why not do us a favour: when you are on
that forum, say stuff like "For more discussion of this interesting
problem (or issue), go to alt.html with a good newreader"

Uh uh... *That* is the just the first part of what they do! You wait.
The next stage is they come and take your wife away, they take your dog,
if they like your rented house, they talk to your landlord. Be careful
Richard, I have heard bad stories. Here at least there are no strings
attached.

Most interesting. First, I need a wife, a dog, and a rented house.
Then, they'd have to find me. Kind of hard to do when you're using verizon
wifi. If they get really really lucky, they might get the right state, and
maybe even the right city.

Well, I had no trouble tracking you down to the back of a beat up truck.
But I have unusual means. I have decided it is perhaps safe enough for
*you* to use sitepoint.

It's probably still loading.

Maybe, maybe not. "Helpful" is a relative term which reminds me of the
dork with the tables a few threads back who "solved" his problem using
javascript glommed from some web forum undoubtedly like the one under
discussion.

Don't get me wrong; the OP to which I referred is no dummy. He knew
how to code/do markup and all that, I'm sure. However, his expertise
did seem to be years out-of-date, but the main problem was that he
didn't know how to present his problem properly at all. The phrasing
of his question was the pits, and a simple template-example would have
worked wonders in illuminating the goal which to this very time is
still soemwhat ambiguous. Anyway, he got a javascript "solution" when
(I am *sure*) a real css/html solution could have been offered had he
concentrated less on his ego and more on the problem he was trying to
solve in the first place. Furthermore, remember this: I and others
here are not obligated to kiss your ass in order to help you. If that
violates your credo or sensibilities, you know what you can do about
it.

I have no pity for these thin-skinned varmints. May they enjoy their
time in self-delusion land because they certainly won't enjoy the
benefits of a well-constructed website.

Well said.

But their (the incumbents who use these types of forums) customers will
eventually see the downside of having a web site that simply does not work
correctly when the one down the road does. And then said customers just
might, hopefully, come to me. More work for me.

Me, who can scribe a web site that does actually work, because I spend lots
and lots of time *here* in alt.html, amongst other similar places, and see
the flames erupting when something stupid is suggested as a "solution".

Here I learn many things from the sidetalk. If I ask a question (not that I
do) I don't expect a simple answer, I expect a complete dissection of the
question and all its implications, with perhaps, serendipitously, an actual
answer.

As RtS says, ask a question over in his favourite forum and you get an
answer. Q: How do I shoot myself in the foot? A: Hold gun vertically, sharp
end down, energise. Over here we just might discuss the matter. In the case
of RtS, perhaps what calibre to use to maximum effect.

I am Nered! I have spoken the truth. All who fail to believe the truths I
speak shall be smitten down with horsehockey!
All who do not follow my teachings are neanderthals and shall be treated as
mindless apes running through the forest.

Now really, I personally can't stand an asshole who feels any one else is
inferior.

"Why do use a 44 magnum?"
"Because I've seen even a 357 bounce off the glass of a windshield."

"If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing." - mythbusters.

Now in the case of shooting one's foot, I'd think then that the proper size
caliber to use would be no less than 50mm. That I believe would get the job
done quickly and efficiently.
