Well said.
But their (the incumbents who use these types of forums) customers
will eventually see the downside of having a web site that simply
does not work correctly when the one down the road does. And then
said customers just might, hopefully, come to me. More work for me.
Me, who can scribe a web site that does actually work, because I
spend lots and lots of time *here* in alt.html, amongst other similar
places, and see the flames erupting when something stupid is
suggested as a "solution".
Here I learn many things from the sidetalk. If I ask a question (not
that I do) I don't expect a simple answer, I expect a complete
dissection of the question and all its implications, with perhaps,
serendipitously, an actual answer.
As RtS says, ask a question over in his favourite forum and you get
an answer. Q: How do I shoot myself in the foot? A: Hold gun
vertically, sharp end down, energise. Over here we just might discuss
the matter. In the case of RtS, perhaps what calibre to use to
maximum effect.
Yes, I agree. All "answers" are not created equal, and the "packaged"
kind tend to have less worth than the type which is truly an original
and earnest offering of an experienced opinion. The web forums I've
seen lack both originality and spontaneity; often they are no more than
excuses for advertising and the revenue it can bring the webmaster.
