I think it's ridiculous to waste time with pointless conversations like
this, especially if you don't take a good hard look at your own posting
patterns. This sudden attempt to tell people how to post is no less annoying
than the new troll.

Right now I'm fed up with the noise level of this group.

I expect that the regulars make efforts to limit the noise to a minimum
rather than unnecessarily adding to the noise.

I'm anything but perfect. Please let me know next time I cross the line.

But does whining about it ever help? I've yet to see any proof...

Some people have killfiles. Other people, like me, just see a person's email
address and don't waste time reading their posts after a while. Until the
poster has nothing to offer but insults and curses, as per the average
troll, I don't care if it meets any definition of a "good reply". You seem
to be asking for moderation, and that's one door down the hall.

Hey and I didn't even contribute to this thread.
Making more enemies Matt?

I've made plenty of enemies, I'm sure. I used to rag on Uri way back when,
for example, and I'm sure there are any number of posters here who don't
care for me any more than I care for them. The difference between someone
like youself and someone like me is that I can engage other people in a
dialogue without resorting to name-calling and swearing.

And Matt reserves the right to do the mind dump, on robic0.
If he ain't around, the dump works fine on someone else.
Classic mob.

Matt, you may be right, but you don't look so good.
Try prozac, I hear it works wonders!

Xho's response to a 100% off-topic CGI / webserver configuration

You know that, I know that, but the OP clearly didn't. Maybe try to
remember that once you also didn't know where CGI ended and Perl started.
You never posted in the wrong group, just because you got a thing wrong? I
did. Did I do it on purpose? No. Did the OP do so? I doubt it.
was right on the mark. He showed how to remove the question
mark from a string in Perl. That's it.

If was a plain wrong answer. **** OFF would have been less misleading.

What is Usenet about?
Remember, if you ask a stupid question, you'll get a stupid answer...

There are no stupid questions, just stupid answers.

Neverending patronizing responses to responses to off-topic questions
that go on and on are getting really annoying as well.

Xho's response to a 100% off-topic CGI / webserver configuration
question was right on the mark. He showed how to remove the question
mark from a string in Perl. That's it.

It was stupid. That's it. The problem with replies such as Xho's one in
the case here is that they tend to lead to more noise. And I don't mean
the noise we are currently producing.

I am referring to an OP who, on seeing the response believing that it
was made seriously, could be tempted to post an off-topic follow-up
question. The best approach is to point those people to the
off-topicness of their request, optionally mentioning better places to
look for an answer. Why is that so hard?

The 'wittiness' exhibited by Xho in this particular case is uncalled for
and counter-productive.

It doesn't bother me to pay someone in kind. You do little here but try and
insult the regular posters, so I don't even bat an eye when it comes to
throwing an insult back at you.

As for John, I found it incredibly offensive that he would descend out of
lurking mode to insult the regular posters. He could have found a better way
to express himself. Had he, I wouldn't have said anything about my own
distaste with his posting practices. You just better be ready to hold a
mirror up to your own face if you want to start pointing out the warts on
others.
