Well, no. Gmail and Google Groups are often used by the same people, but
neither require the other. You can post from any news service using a Gmail
address, and you can post from GG using any email address.
Yeah, I see from some of the responses on this that different people
mean different things. Some are filtering out gmail addresses, others
GG, others a combination. FTR, I saw a post in another ng from a
gmail address using GG, which linked to one of those "you may have a
virus" attack sites. I reported it to both gmail and GG, but from
what people are saying here, Google just doesn't much care. Then
again, I've reported all sorts of problems (mostly bugs and buggering
up the interface) to Yahoo, and they don't care either. I don't know
if there are any "good guys" among the big Net players.
For Usenet, I don't use a killfile, but rather use a sort of mental
"white list/black list" approach. There are certain posters I expect
to be worth reading, so I look for them first. Then, if I have time,
I look at others that I don't have good reason to expect to be boring
and a waste of time. If I ever get back to using a real newsreader,
maybe I'll formalize it a bit.
